Chemical Policy Implementation Process

HCL plans to achieve the objectives outlined in our Chemical Policy in a phased manner to restrict the use of the listed chemicals. HCL plans the phased effort in this direction in the following manner:

Information available in public domain and legislation by regulatory bodies:

Checking for any Valuable Inputs from sources such as:
  1. Government Guidelines
  2. Regulatory bodies like CPCB(Central Pollution Control Board)
  3. Formal Association like MAIT , CII
  4. Other regulating bodies which may provide valuable inputs
  5. Partners and Suppliers Ecosystem who are 'Technology Owners'
  6. International standard making bodies, international forums and other studies from Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) (NGOs)
HCL's Product Engineering Organization coordinates the effort in the following manner:

Bans/ Restricts hazardous substances and or components from suppliers.
  1. Vendor compliance is taken for supplying components that meet Specification.
  2. Establishment of appropriate time lines for vendors to work on and comply with HCL specifications and objectives.
  3. Maintaining a log of items that are by legislation categorized as harmful or listed as hazardous substance.
  4. Solutions to identify economical and safe substitutes for such chemicals/components.
  5. Defining a time line for a phase out of such chemicals/components
  6. HCL is working on economically viable and safe alternatives to replace PVC and BFR. HCL has introduced a PVC free laptop computer in this direction. For eliminating BFR from its product, HCL is working towards the targeted date of 31st December, 2010
  7. HCL is also working with suppliers for the elimination/restriction of other hazardous substances listed as class B compounds whose effects have not been totally established
HCL under its ecoSafe initiative has committed to work with the regulatory bodies and industry partners, in order to achive an environmental friendly manufacturing process which is free from hazardous substances or components. This will help curtail adverse environmental impacts.
