HCL eSafe : Join us in making a safe tomorrow

HCL's drive for Customer Awareness

HCL's chemical management policy for its suppliers:

HCL makes all effort to provide Green and clean products to consumers. Accordingly, HCL has launched eco-safe program to ensure that all HCL products match all standards and compliances. In addition, HCL after consulting various stakeholders like NGOs, Consumers and Suppliers as a responsible corporate citizen has identified some targeted substances for immediate phase-out across all product ranges.

HCL in communicating material restriction has a comprehensive escalation process for its supply chain to ensure that suppliers do not use restricted substances or use substances in their recommended safe limits only.

HCL has identified a list of targeted substances according to;

  • All substances listed under European, Indian and other international treaties to be banned.
  • European RoHS legislation compliances.
  • List of chemicals which are not covered by any law, treaties or convention but are known to pose serious environmental and health damage.
  • HCL also consults the entire OSPAR list of chemicals to further identify harmful substances for elimination.

The chemical management policy covers materials /substances that have been banned or restricted for product manufacturing, seeing their negative effect on the environment. HCL has encouraged its supplier community to comply with its targets for phasing out of such substances, giving strict time lines, so that HCL can meet its commitments.

To communicate to supplier community material restriction as and when required by HCL and to adhere to time lines set

Supply chain Management

HCL believes its eco product requirement can be fulfilled only by maintaining a green supply chain. Suppliers are selected satisfying the following requirements

· Quality

· Cost effectiveness

· Environmentally sound

To meet the requirement of eco friendly products suppliers are evaluated periodically through supplier evaluation form.

Monitoring of Our Product Quality

To ensure the products delivered meet all our requirements they are analysed regularly as follows

· XRF Analyser: Periodic checks on the quality of the products supplied to us by the suppliers is carried out internally by our quality control team with the help of XRF Analyser.

· For complete chemical analysis of our products the samples are sent to recognized chemical testing laboratory externally on regular basis.

Restriction criteria for substances:

a. Materials/substances that may trigger hazardous waste management requirements.

b. Material/ substances that may have a negative impact on the environment, health, and safety of stakeholders/ users.

Guidelines for Restriction of chemical substances in products to our suppliers:

As per our Chemical Policy based on Precautionary Principle we constantly update our chemical restriction list. The chemicals substances are classified into two classes of compounds.

Class A: This list includes all the chemicals substances, elements, their alloys and compounds which are totally banned from all our products due to their hazardous properties.

Class B: This list includes the restriction in use of certain chemical substances, their alloys and compounds as per the limits specified and the timeline for its phase out.

Product packaging material restriction

HCL's objective is to use packaging materials in a way which has minimum impacts on environment. During the product development stage, product packaging is designed keeping mind the following points:

. Use of only recyclable material

. Use of minimum possible size & weight in order to reduce material consumption

. Use of recycled material wherever possible

. Specifying the list of banned and restricted chemicals for packaging materials

HCL currently implemented the following measures

. Restricted the presence of lead, cadmium, mercury and hexavalent chromium present in packaging or packaging components and it shall not exceed 100ppm by weight. This adopted based on European directive 94/62/EC

. Usage of only recyclable buffers in carton boxes

. No usage of polyethylene bags having thickness less than 20micron
