HCL Infosystems, India’s premier information enabling company and torch-bearers of taking the PC revolution to Indian rural areas, today showcased a comprehensive range of revolutionary computer solutions significantly designed to suit the demands for rural India.

Present in the city on the occasion of Mindia Conclave at Nagpur, Mr. Ajai Chowdhry – Chairman & CEO, HCL Infosystems Ltd., said, “The products displayed here are a reflection of our continuous endeavor to take IT to the grass root levels of India and leveraging its power to help develop a thriving economy – not only for urban areas but for the entire nation. We believe that even this is just a beginning and our strong R&D initiatives would consistently work to make this entire nation, IT empowered.”

The latest addition to this wide range of products is a HCL Uday, a product, which has been co-developed by Intel, yet another initiative in adopting PC technology to suit the severe operating conditions in rural India. Some of the key HCL solutions, for rural India are as follows:

HCL Community PC is empowered with several pioneering features such as single-key data recovery capability, capability to work under extreme temperature & humidity conditions, ‘Data-lock’ feature to act as security for financial institutions which offer loans & assistance to purchase the PC and host of other standard features.

Erratic and fluctuating power is a major issue and a deterrent to PC usage. HCL has developed a power management system called RP2 that switches the computer to a power battery that is charged by using bicycle peddle power when the power phases out. It frees the user from having to depend on an erratic power supply, as well as other electricity related disruptions like voltage fluctuate etc. The Solar Power Panel is another solution to the power problems in rural areas.

The Four Terminal PC has 4 terminals, 4 each of keyboards, mouse, and it runs on 1 CPU, PCI card and USB through a special software. This PC is targeted at education segment in rural markets and it’s a good alternative to educational institutes as it reduces power consumption, cost per user. The PC also takes less time for deployment and therefore it’s best suited for large-scale mass deployment.

There is a huge untapped market in India, which is not buying PCs because of its high pricing. The launch a functionally rich PC priced at Rs.9990 named ‘PC for India’ is aimed at breaking the price barrier. HCL’s PC for India designed for the first time PC users and is ready to support applications like word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and web browsing, e-mail clients, audio Video playback.

India is a multilingual country and considering that less than 5% of the Indian population understands English. HCL has pre-loaded all its PCs with operating systems in multilingual Indian fonts and software’s in languages like Tamil, Hindi, etc.

HCL products are rigorously tested to withstand the rugged and diverse weather, power & transportation conditions of the Indian rural markets. HCL also undertakes various reliability tests viz. heat & soak chamber, cold chamber, drop tests etc before shipping the products.

Also HCL Infosystems has a strong direct support force of over 2800+ members operational at 300+ locations across the country. It is the largest such human resource of its kind in the IT business. This force addresses the issue of physical presence in a majority of cities especially for rural India where toll free numbers and customer service are not the most viable option, and a face-to-face interaction works best.
